Help us defeat a proposed tax that could kill local radio as we know it!

Radio at Risk: The Issue
The recording industry wants to impose a fee – a performance tax – on local radio stations. This performance tax would financially hurt local radio stations, stifle new artists and harm the listening public who rely on free local radio.

What this Means for You!
A tax could reduce the variety of music radio stations play, and all but eliminate the possibility of new artists breaking onto the scene. It also affects your community. Radio stations are major contributors to public service – providing free airtime to help local charities. If a tax were imposed, stations’ critical community service efforts could be reduced.

Free Play for Free Promotion
For more than 80 years, radio and the recording industry have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship: free play for free promotion. And it works. It’s a relationship that has sustained businesses on both sides.

But the labels–like many businesses–are struggling in this economy. They have failed to adapt to the digital age, and find their business model is broken. And now they want to impose a fee called a performance tax on local radio stations to subsidize their losses. A performance tax would threaten the local radio stations that communities depend on. It would financially hamstring stations, stifle new artists and harm the listening public who rely on free local radio.

If the radio stations have to pay a tax to play a song, I believe they will go out of business. Then what happens to the bands and singers? Is this the day the music died? I personally will hear a song and if I like it< I will go out and buy the CD.

    To my fellow contributors"
What part of "The recording industry wants to impose a fee – a performance tax – on local radio stations." don't you understand?
This is not some liberal "tax and spend" thing! It's put forth by a bunch of greedy people who want more money for nothing.

It's NOT sponsored by the government, it's being pushed by the RIAA!
  • Radio Tax
It won't stop with music. Obama and the other radicals currently in office want to control the airwaves and very likely the internet. Its all about controlling the flow of information. The extra revenues are just a byproduct of this control. Beware of any further encroachment of our rights.

What else are the Washington politicians going to want to tax? They have no sense of decency or respect. It's thanks to talk radio that the public stays informed of shanannigans like this. What happened to freedom of speach? Are they going to tax that next? Let's unite and revamp the Washington crowd. Enough is enought. The sleeping giant needs to wake up and take matters seriously. We are the government, not the Big Shots, who don't identify with the us, the regular folks. Have you ever imagined a Senator counting his change in order to make his mortgage payment? Nah. Let's elect a few of "us" in order to clean house down in Washington.

I am a musician and songwriter and I strongly oppose HR848, The Performance Rights Tax. For years, radio has provided artists with the best possible exposure for free. Without radio airplay, who would bring our music to the masses? RIAA should be paying the broadcasters!
