LET'S PLAY WHAT IF....
What if Grant Hill had remained in a Magic uniform this season?
All the guy did this year was average career highs in points (19.5), rebounds (5.7) and assists (5.0). Turk led his team in fourth quarter scoring and played a principle role in his Magic winning the Southeast Division.
We'll never know the answer to this question, but let's play what if...What if Grant Hill stays in Orlando?
Remember the summer of 2007? How can we forget? Billy Donovan leaves us standing at the altar. Darko walks in Memphis. Grant Hill shuns us for the bright lights and big city of the desert.
If Grant stays in Orlando, Hedo is not the NBA's Most Improved Player.
It's very likely that Grant would have started at the small forward spot this season in Orlando, which would have drastically slashed Hedo's minutes. With Grant gone, Hedo averages 36.9 minutes per game (third on the team).
If Grant stays, there's a chemistry issue. In the rare seasons that Grant was healthy, I never got the feeling that Grant and Hedo were on the same page. There are some guys who, for some reason, just don't click. Hedo and Grant were two of those guys. For whatever reason, Hedo got very tentative when the two shared the court. This season, Hedo's been anything but tentative.
If Grant stays in Orlando, it's highly unlikely that we make that early season deal with the Lakers to get Brian Cook and Maurice Evans. Both those guys were instrumental in Orlando's run toward the 52 win mark. Evans has been a solid role player, something that every championship contender must have. Cook, who we hope to see very soon, has been a key guy off the bench this season.
If Grant stays, there's no way the Orlando Magic are the Orlando Magic this season. By that, I mean to say that there's no way that the Magic hit 801 three pointers this season. Grant hit on just 33 of 104 of his three's for that high flyin' Phoenix team. Our identity would have been totally different with Grant here.
If Grant stays in Orlando, do we have a shot at advancing to the second round of the playoffs? I think not...not that I don't have faith in Superman and the way he's developed this season. But, I just don't think we're anywhere near 52 wins and a division title with Grant in O-Town.
How ironic is it Grant left Orlando to have a chance to win an NBA title with the Phoenix Suns? Hill's Suns are now on the verge of being blown out in the first round....and Hedo's Magic are on the cusp of winning a playoff series, something Grant never accomplished in Orlando.
Not that I have anything against G-Hill. The guy is a terrific basketball player and even more of a fabulous human being.
But I think you can legitimately make the case that if Grant stays, Hedo's not the NBA's Most Improved Player and the Orlando Magic are much less improved as a team.
