Time to revisit the rulebook
After the Playoffs end, the NBA needs to take a long hard look at its penalties for fighting. Thursday night, the league suspended Magic point guard Rafer Alston for the slap to the back of Eddie House's inflated head.
I know...I know...The rule is clear: "When a player intentionally swings his hand, whether open or closed, if the hand connects, it is an automatic one game suspension."
But, come on...It was a love tap for crying out loud! Intent was obvious. Rafer wasn't out to injure House. He merely wanted to warn him about the elbow he just got to the sternum after the loquacious House had drained yet another three pointer in our face.
Now, Rafer shouldn't have reacted the way he did. But, come on...A suspension? The punishment certainly does not fit the crime here.
While we're at it, how about nailing House with a technical foul every time he taunts the opposing bench? Eddie had the gumption to say after game two, "If I hit shots, I might yell at my teammates or stuff like that. I never disrespect the game by talking crazy to the other team." Eddie, your nose is growin'. Eddie House is one of the biggest trash-talkers and taunters in the game today. He, his coach and his teammates justify Fast Eddie's act as 'emotional'. I call it classless.
With that stated, the stakes are so huge and the play is so intense this time of year that I just have a hard time with all these suspensions we are seeing in the Playoffs. The NBA game is a very physical game. Intensity is through the roof.
I also have a problem with lack of equity here.
For example, how in the world has Celtic point guard Rajon Rondo avoided suspension this postseason? In the first round series with the Bulls', not only does Rondo not get suspended for knocking Brad Miller into yesterday with a haymaker right to Miller's choppers, he also gets off scot-free for dragging Bull Kirk Hinrich into the scorer's table in game six. Where's the equity?
This summer, the league needs to revisit the rulebook. There is no place in the game for on-court violence.
What I have a problem with is the lack of the uniform nature of these penalties.

What others are saying
- Sad incident= Reality CheckRashard Lewis has woken up but I will continue to say that Hedo and now Alston are major liabilities that inflict the Magic as they continue to ascend from the stigma of mediocrity to greatness. Harsh assesment but it's reality. From the isolated plays that Hedo makes here and there that defy reality to the constant lack of defensive focus and selfish shot selection that defy comprehension which result in tough losses, Alston now has supplied the ammo for more woes to Orlando. Aside from the slap, how many times do I watch Ralston make pointless drives to the basket only to dish it off to someone else? Maybe someone makes a basket or more times than not we lose a possesion with no points or no trips to the foul line. Ralston is a typical player but then again he has earned a place for himself in the league. But I believe, and he has proven my assertion with this incident, that just like Hedo, Ralston is more of a liability and we can do better. A humble suggestion is to see AJ start more games as opposed to Ralston. Simply more wisdom and more poise along with proven experience. I'll take that over what Ralston offers any day. Overall, it is a sad incident and hopefully this won't happen again.
- RuleBookNBA vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said tonight that the elbow to Pietrus by Perkins was not a suspendable offense. In his statement he said: "There are two criteria", yes there is, the ones that apply to the Magic and the ones that apply to everyone else.
- Just Play BasketballWhat I have a problem with is after the game BOTH coaches are advocating Just Let Them Play. Well since when is elbows and slaps part of the game?!
Then there is Perkins hitting Pietrus with an elbow to the throat and VG says let them play? Give me a break, if it were the other way around Boston would be on the phone to the NBA before the game even ended.
Why don't we do this, before tipoff we let them just go at it and then play with whomever is still standing. - Visit the Chi Town GameHeck with the rule book. How about the Rondo two step and swing at hinrich..
SCOTT please go look at the tape again - It appears that Rondo after he pulls Hinrich into the side panels - then the official comes into play and stands between them - at that point it appears Rondo takes a swing over the left shoulder of the official. Now how more INTENT can you have?
OK - give him a pass on the Head knocker on Miller - it was in the action of the play - ok half a pass.
Please let us know on the air tonight !!
And lets not chant -Lets go Magic...
Lets Chant - Da Bull Stand Dard.
