Is there a way for us to contact you directly? If so, please send an email to Shannon.Farrell@coxradio.com.
Thanks! - Holly's StoryHi Holly,
Thanks for sharing your story. I hear you and think you hit the nail on the head. Counseling would very likely help you get to the root of your emotions and bring closure plus help you to deal as you move forward. I can hear that food is your outlet, comforter if you will and friend. But it only masks the pain you feel and affects your weight, in turn, affecting how you feel about yourself.
Do you belong to a church that offers counseling? Some counseling groups also have a sliding scale where they work with your financial situation. Ask your friends, call around. I think you have made the first step by admitting you know the emotions are an issue that you don't won't to deal with and they affect your diet.
Let me know what you find out. Dr. Susan - Share YOUR Story!I was doing great with my health last year. My hypoglycemia was easy to manage, my weight and emotions were in check. Then I started having the same nightmare three times a week for three months. I finally found out it was a repressed memory of a one time molestation by a babysitter when I was three years old. I was brave enough to ask my older sisters and parents about it. I could not, however, continue to do my diet. I knew overeating would stop the nightmares and numb the pain so I did it. I originally thought I could lose whatever I gained right away, but it's been a whole year. My overeating only lasted three months. After that I tried to eat healthier and haven't gained any NEW weight, but it takes all my effort just to do that. My main problem is every now and then I need some relief from the overwhelming emotions I apparently don't want to deal with. I don't know where to turn. (And I know counseling might help, but I'm unemployed right now and I don't think I can afford it).
- Calculate Your Calorie GoalWondering how many calories you need each day? To get an estimate multiply your current weight times 12. That number of calories is needed to maintain your current weight. To lose 1 pound a week, cut 500 calories per day or cut some calories and increase your exercise output to equal 500.
Dr. Susan - time translates into resultsAs you get started on your healhty lifestyle, remember that the time you invest determines results. The more time you spend in the kitchen and planning your meals plus exercising, the greater your results.
Dr. Susan - response to Lynn re: A good breakfastThis breakfast is excellent and yummy. The date from the Weight Control Registry shows that the successful losers eat a good breakfast...just as you are doing. Way to go Lynn. Be sure and listen to the podcast this week. Ali Vincent from TV's The Biggest Loser will be my guest.
- A Good BreakfastEating a good breakfast makes eating sensibly and losing weight alot easier. I start the day off with a poached Eggland's Best egg, add some sliced tomatoes, green chilies, a 1/4 c black beans, and some fat free cheese. Layer it all in a container and microwave it when I get to work. If I start the day off bad nutritionally it is impossible to get back on track.
- Response to TerriHi Terri,
I hear you...those last pounds can be so frustrating. Consider changing your view on eating and dieting. If you follow a medical nutrition plan, that's one thing, but if you are on a 'diet', you may feel negative just being on it. Focus on your positive habits and slowly making changes in how you eat instead of focusing on the last pounds. I know you will be successful. - where to beginHi Lynn,
Thanks for your comment. This Cyber Club is your place to get tips, ideas, recipes, and share your story. It's not a 'diet' plan. There are a million of those out there. I would start by listening to the audio above entitled Tips to Eat Smart for 2010.
Decide on ONE tweak you want to make to your health/way you eat and start now. Tell us how you are doing. As it becomes habit, pick something else. Maybe it's use a smaller plate for lunch and dinner or cook one of our healthy recipes twice a week. What do you think? - weight lossWhere do I begin??
- Losing WeightI manage to stay the same dress size, but sometimes fill out my clothes a little too much. I can get myself to stick to a plan for two weeks, but then I get lazy. It's not a lot of weight...just 10 pounds. It's so hard to lose that last 10 pounds. Why is that and how do I stay inspired to keep pushing myself until I hit my goal???
