Tourist Development Tax takes a dive

We told you earlier this week that tourism is down in Orange County. New numbers released Thursday show Tourist Development Tax collections for February are down nearly 30 percent from a year ago.

Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie says the news continues to be bad.

"If you look at the collections of February 2009 to the collections in February 2008, the numbers are simply grim," she said.

Haynie says everything from the Citrus Bowl renovation to the new performing arts center will be pushed back if TDT numbers continue to decline.

But Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer says the city has already been working on contingency plans.

"Well I've had concerns for quite a long time that the Tourist Development Tax is not going to be what we thought it would be, so we're obviously looking at alternatives," Dyer said. "So this comes as no surprise."

The Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau relies heavily on the TDT for their operating budget.

"Rough percentages is about 60 percent Tourist Development Tax," said CVB Chief Gary Sain. "That effects us because our budget is based on the funding. And when that's down we've got to adjust accordingly."
