Daytona Speedway under water
SLIDESHOW: Daytona Speedway Flooded More rain was falling Friday morning in the Daytona Beach area, with another 2 inches recorded.
So much has fallen that race cars won't be using the track at Daytona Beach International Speeday. Much of it is under water. Long time race fans and workers say they've never seen it so bad.Unofficial rainfall totals from the last few days of rain have reached over 24 inches in Ormond Beach and more than 27 inches in Bunnell.
U.S. Reps. John Mica, R-Winter Park, and Suzanne Kosmas D-New Smyrna, toured flooded parts of the area Friday morning and promised to get federal assistance.The Secretary of Homeland Security is visiting a soggy Central Florida just days before another hurricane season. Janet Napolitano will be with new FEMA chief Craig Fugate whose last job was running Florida's division of emergency management. As she visits, many Volusia County residents are counting their losses from flooding., now estimated at $52 million and climbing.
Volusia Property Appraiser Morgan Gilreath says his staff is still trying to reach what could be damaged homes on flooded streets. "There's no way to predict by helicopter tour and go down there and find that none of them have water inside, but you may go down there and find all of them did.
Fire departments in Volusia County, and Daytona Beach have been busy the past several days rescuing people from homes with over a foot of water in them.
