Car chase down bike path ends with three teens arrested
A bizarre car chase down a bike path ends with three teens arrested in Orange County.
It all started around 1:45 Friday morning when deputies got a call that 18-year-old Otis Peurifoy had threatened someone at the Colony Apartments on University Boulevard.
"The people who called us said that they were threatened that this man was going to shoot them," said Lt. Spike Hopkins.
Hopkins tells Eyewitness News Channel 9 that deputies investigating the threat spotted Peurifoy on the property and tried to pull him over, but the teen hit the gas and went for a deputy in a patrol car.
"This guy is lucky that he didn't get shot tonight," said Hopkins. "A car is probably more dangerous than a bullet going at a deputy because of the damage it will cause and how large it is."
Somehow the deputy got out of the way of Peurifoy's car. Then a short chase ensued through the neighborhood. Hopkins says Peurifoy tried to escape by driving down the Little Econ bike path. As he approached Goldenrod, he couldn't get around a large cement pole and crashed into it. Two passengers were arrested at that point, but Peurifoy ran into a swampy area.
"It was literally waist-deep water and muck back in the wooded area," said Hopkins. "He didn't get far in there. He was a heavyset guy. We had the helicopter overhead, and we had a K-9 immediately there."
Peurifoy was captured a short time later and charged with aggravated assault and fleeing and eluding. His 19-year-old passenger, Richard King, was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Deputies say he threw drugs out of the car during the chase. A 16-year-old girl was charged with resisting without violence. She had a warrant out for her arrest for trespassing and marijuana possession.
