OPD K-9 put down after chase, arrest

The suspects were driving a car reported stolen out of Zellwood on the East-West Expressway (SR 408) when spotted by an officer in an unmarked police car.
A chase ensued and it ended with the arrests near Lake Pickett Road and East Colonial.
The dog, named Viper, was hurt while it was being deployed when it was struck by the patrol car that rolled into a ditch.
Confused and in pain, the dog bit the arm of its handler, Officer Danny Sidders while he was trying to arrest one of the suspects.
Unable to get the dog to release its hold, Sidders shot it.
Viper was about three years old and had been with OPD for a year and a half.
"It was trained in explosives, tracking and apprehension," said Sgt. Barb Jones.
