A 16 year old suspected car thief was shot at Chevron service station at Pine Hills and Silver Star Thursday morning, a deputy in a restroom was shot, and a deputy responding to the scene was injured when he crashed his motorcycle.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings says a plain clothes deputies spotted a stolen vehicle around 11:26 a.m. and followed it to the store. They went in to make an arrest and, "as soon as they got in they realized it appears the suspect was getting ready to rob the business. He had a handgun and they engaged in gunfire." The teen was shot at least once. (photo: Channel 9 Eyewitness News)

Sheriff Demings says a female deputy in a different unit was in the store's restroom when the shooting happened. A bullet went through the wall and struck the deputy in the leg. The sheriff says she suffered a non-life threatening injury. "She was sitting up and conscious and suffered non-life threatening injuries."

But a store clerk at the Chevron, who didn't want to be identified, told WDBO a different story. The clerk said the suspect was not trying to rob the store and had come inside to buy a phone card. That's when deputes came in and ordered the suspect on the ground.

The clerk says the suspect tried to escape out the back out the store, but the door was locked.

"He[suspect] pulled out a gun and the undercover cops shot him," the clerk said.

According to the clerk the female officer was shot by the suspect and locked herself in the bathroom to escape the danger.

A third deputy, was responding to the shooting scene when he crashed his motorcycle and was injured. Sheriff Demings says there were no customers in the store when the shots were fired. He says the teen suspect put a gun to the sales clerk's head but the clerk "barricaded himself and is a good witness and saw what was going on in the store." The sheriff says all three of those injured have been taken to ORMC.

Deputies have been working undercover in the Pine Hills area recently, the sheriff said, because of a rash of thefts involving Dodge Intrepids.
