Orlando Jai Alai closing down after 47 years
Orlando Jai Alai, a Central Florida landmark since 1962, is shutting down.

Attendance has been shrinking at the fronton in recent years, and its manager is blaming greater competition and a stubborn county government.
"Business has been declining for years," said mutuels manager Howard Ostrom. "A lot of it has to do with at the present time, you're not a level playing field with the rest of Florida as far as gambling establishments."
Ostrom says the biggest craze for gamblers now is poker, but Seminole Count commissioners have banned Orlando Jai Alai and the Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club from holding card games.
"I sure as hell have resentment toward it. I've worked here a long time," Ostrom said. "You have off-shore boats, you have Indian casinos, internet cafes. None of which pay taxes to the state of Florida. And we pay heavy taxes and we have all sorts of regulations."
Orlando Jai Alai's boom days were in the 1970's and 80's. It's also played host to concerts, including Elvis Presley and U2.
"We've been a family owned business, a landmark, since 1962," Ostrom said. "Now it's all flushed down the drain."
The fronton also allows betting on horse racing displayed on video feeds.
Orlando Jai Alai will close on December 27th. 75 employees and 30 players will be out of work. Ostrom says they're not planning a big send-off because there's not enough time.
What others are saying
- PokerWhy cant we just have some poker rooms in Central Florida?
- Orlando Jai Alai ClosingI'd Like to see one more short season and one more Citrus tournament. Come on, owners-step up to the plate. Its the right thing to do for the players, employees and the fans of the sport. There is finally some press-it would draw alot of attention.
- County Commishion ScumbagsThe owner hit it on the head. Seminole county has a backwards thinking, right wing, head up their ass, county commishion. They have a county card room ban at a time when poker rooms have exploded all over the state. That's great thinking...Let's keep them from creating jobs, because it's not like we're in a bad economy or anything. If fact, now they are shutting down completely and causing more job loss - 105 more people on the unemployment rolls. But that's OK, It's not like we could have used the jobs or the millions in tax revenue.
- DetailsBy state law, the fronton is not allowed to show dog races because there is a dog track just down the street. Therefore, they only simulcast horses (thoroughbreds and harness) and other jai alai gaming (from Dania and Miami). As for their final jai alai match, that was back in March or April. They are not currently playing live games; they are only simulcasting right now (and even that ends on December 27th).
