Are debt collectors out of control?
The state has not cracked down much despite thousands of complaints.
Eva Porter's brother used to live with her and ran up debts. Now debt collectors are bothering her to get to him. "They're calling at 7 o'clock in the morning on a Saturday. They're even called one morning and woke me up at 6:30 in the morning."
She and others have complained but Attorney General Bill McCollum says his office lacks authority to crack down on abusive collectors. "A lot of confusion existed out there over this issue, and I want to make sure we have the powers that people think we do." Both McCollum and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink are asking for legislation to make the policing process easier.

- running amokMost debt collectors are over the top when it comes to collecting even small amounts. i.e. less than $10. I have collectors calling my home phone at all hours of the day and night looking for a Jack Desilva. I have had the phone number for over 7 years and as far as I know, this person never had been assigned the number. The phone company (Embarq) refuses to help in resolving the matter at all.
