Red light cameras have caused controversy from the beginning. And now a driver's advocacy group is coming after Orlando, looking into records, and the city's relationship with their camera vendor.

Gary Filler with the National Motorist Association says it's pretty clear to him that red light cameras serve one purpose only.

"Statistics seem to back it up everywhere the cameras pop up, that it's revenue driven," he said.

So now the NMA wants more information about Orlando's red light cameras, including accident rates and the yellow light timing.

"A lot of cities have been caught shortening yellow light times below Federal minimums," Filler said. That helps increase tickets, leading to another issue: Does the city have a deal with their camera vendor to share ticket revenues?

"In a lot of instances, camera companies actually have a vested interest in how many citations are being issued. They may get so many dollars per citation, or a percentage of the fine - which seems a bit of a conflict of interest when they're setting the operating parameters for the cameras."

Filler says they'll make their findings public after they hear back from the city.

What others are saying

  • Red Light Runners
I see too many people during the day NOT EVEN ATTEMPTING TO SLOW DOWN FOR THE YELLOW LIGHTS, and I believe, they get what they deserve for the flagrant violation of running the light. KEEP THE CAMERAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • cameras 4 red light runners
How about SOME SMARTER TRAFFIC LIGHTS THAT actually SENSE when there is no other traffic so the light will actually Yield to us- the ONLY traffic present at the otherwise empty barren intersection!!!!!!!Helping us utilize GAS more efficiently reduce emmissions too..... ALOT!...Aduh..... like get a clue please...Naah makes too much sense! and no money for government.
  • Ticket Cameras
There will be a protest of these devices at teh intersection of Conroy and Vineland Road 11/14/09 at 10AM. The protest is sponsored by the Florida Civil Rights Association
  • Red Light Cameras
I hate those cameras but anyone that thinks that the financial relationship a city has with its operator can increase the number of violations is simply ignorant. People that run red lights do not do so because they are aware of how the vendor is paid. WEhat conflict of interest can possibly exist if the vendor has no control over the light signal timing.
  • Red light ticketing cameras
If one wants to find out the truth about something follow the dollar. Conversely, if one wants to find out the lies about something, follow the same dollar..
  • just another tax on you and me
Time to fire all of these PUBLIC SERVANTS!!!! We cant afford thier looking out for our safty. Dont we have a paid Police force to do this correctly? Oh I get it if we station a patrol car at one of these intersections no one will run the light so no new revenue will be filling the cchests at city hall
