Hang-glider killed in Polk County crash
DAVENPORT -- An autopsy has been scheduled for a 59-year-old Vermont man who died after a hang-gliding crash in Central Florida.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Anthony Ameo, of Sheffield, Vermont, was pronounced dead at a hospital Sunday. Ameo was airlifted to the hospital with critical injuries following the Sunday afternoon crash in Davenport.
Witnesses told authorities that Ameo was hang-gliding at Wallaby Ranch in Davenport on Sunday afternoon when he attempted to land the hang-glider and struck a tree, which caused him to crash to the ground.
Mr. Ameo was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. He underwent surgery at the hospital, but died during surgery due to the extent of his internal injuries.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
