Veterans still struggle to find work in private sector
The White House announced this week that it will increase efforts to train and hire veterans for government employment - hopefully setting an example for the private sector. WDBO spoke with the local American Legion about this effort.
Cliff Collins Jr. says he's pleased to see the president move forward with the Council on Veterans Employment."This is still basically the same program we've had, but it's accelerated," he said.
But Collins worries how long the program could take kick in.
Meanwhile, Collins sees a steady stream of hard-luck stories at the Orlando American Legion. Like National Guardsmen who lost their jobs when they went to Iraq, and can't seem to get them back. And soldiers who return to find employers are less than enthusiastic to hire veterans.
"If the private sector - this is a little strong - could get some morality about them en masse, and look out for the people who defended us first, preferentially, it could be great."
What others are saying
- VetI remember getting out of the service, and the fact was that at the age of 22 I did not have any marketable skills on the outside besides working for a gov't contractor. I had to go to school with all the other unskilled just out of high school people. Marketable skills are the key to finding a job, but the vet experience on a resume in addition to those skill usually don't hurt.
