Amscot robbery suspect charged with bomb hoax
The man pulled out of an east Orlando Amscot with a suspected explosive device around his neck is now facing several charges for the attempted robbery.
The incident at the check cashing store on Goldenrod near Lake Underhill Sunday shutting down the busy road for nearly four hours, and causing an evacuation of the area.The robbery began around 10:30 a.m. The building was cleared, leaving only the suspect and another person inside. Police spent hours trying to negotiate the situation. They also spent much of that time trying to assess what the explosive was that was around the neck of one of those inside.
Around 1:15 p.m., the Orange County Sheriff's Department was successful at getting those last two people out. They were also able to get the explosive off the one person's neck - a device that turned out to be harmless.
Investigators eventually figured out that man was involved in the robbery. 47-year-old Joseph Martin Turner (pictured) was booked into the Orange County jail for attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, planting a hoax bomb, and false reporting of a bomb. Records show he lives in the Waterford Lakes area.
Turner made his first appearance in front of a judge Monday morning. She gave him no bond, and ordered him to avoid making contact with any witnesses to the robbery or accomplices.
Authorities are still looking for at least one other suspect.
Goldenrod and the businesses near the Amscot were back open shortly after 2 p.m.
