El Nino winters tend to favor tornadoes
While the El Nino certainly gave us a mild hurricane season, it may leave us with a wacky winter.
"El Nino brings a wetter than average season of winter - it also brings us colder weather," says Meteorologist Tom Terry with Channel 9 Eyewitness News. "Now along with the wet comes the risk for severe weather."Terry says just like the winter of 06-07, this El Nino appears to be mild. But it could also produce some serious storms.
"We had the Christmas Day tornadoes around DeLand (in 2007), and then we had the Groundhog Day, February 2nd of '07," he said. "So it usually is a series of small outbreaks, but they can certainly be deadly."
Terry says we should pay attention to the front coming Wednesday, which could give us our first taste of this year's El Nino winter.
