Suspect Shot, Crime Spree Ends

A robber was on a crime spree across Orange and Lake counties, but not anymore. Apopka police caught him right after his last robbery and, when he tried to escape by ramming a police car, officers shot him.

In just the past few days, police say the suspect robbed one store in Lake County and two in Apopka, including a Dollar General store on Orange Blossom Trail on Wednesday.

Apopka police say 36-year-old Shawn Chapman walked in the Dollar General store, stole whatever he could get his hands on and then left. He had no idea police were waiting for him.

Apopka police set out Wednesday to put the brakes on Chapman's crime spree. Police say he has stolen from stores in both Lake and Orange counties to support a drug habit. That came to end early Wednesday afternoon.

When the suspect came out of the store in the Victoria Plaza off Orange Blossom Trail in Apopka, the officers who tracked him had set up a blockade, but it wasn't secure enough.

"It appears, right now, that he tried to ram his car, his way out of their block, and attempts to block, to take him into custody, which forced them to fire their weapons at him," explained Danny Banks, Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Investigators say both officers opened fire. One bullet hit Chapman in the upper body, but he kept driving.

Minutes later, Chapman lost control of the stolen white truck near the intersection of Earlwood and Franklin and hit several trees.

"Today he's going to jail and maybe that's where he needs to stay," Banks said.

The suspect was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. As soon as he's cleared, he'll be transported to jail.
