From Haiti to Sanford: 1,200 and counting
The planes from Haiti continue to land at the Orlando-Sanford International Airport, and 15 flights in all are expected Monday through 3:00 am Tuesday.
We weren't allowed to see the passengers as they were shuttled onto buses, but dozens of agency trucks were parked outside the terminal, running the length of the building. Along with DCF and Homeland Security, there were vehicles and personnel from the Red Cross, the Seminole County Sheriff's Department, Sanford Police, and even the Sanford Fire Department.
Vice President of Airport Operations Diane Cruz told us, as of 5:30 pm Monday, 1,200 people had made the two-hour flight from Haiti via military transport following last week's devestating earthquake.
"It's really very poignant to see them depart off the aircraft. And so many are children."
The passengers are Americans, Haitian-Americans and foreign nationals, and every one of them goes through the usual customs procedures before entering a secure holding area.
"They are screened by the Department of Children and Families," Cruz said. "And the Red Cross is there, and other agencies, to help assess their needs and respond to those [needs]."
She said their needs range from food and shelter to money, available to Americans through loans from DCF.
"Some of them have no cash and no wallets, you know, considering what their experience was in Haiti."
They also get access to phones and computers to get in touch with family and friends, or book flights back home. After that, it's onto a bus and off to area hotels or, in most cases, Orlando International Airport.
For many, Orlando is far from the last stop.
