Harvest Time for Haiti, donations keep volunteers busy
Check out the Harvest for Haiti slideshow.
Just across town from the Orlando-Sanford International Airport, volunteers are filling a warehouse with emergency supplies for the Haitian earthquake's survivors.
Harvest Time International has been getting truckloads of donations for days, and even Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Thomas seemed overwhelmed by the response.
"Yes, we have... all sizes of vehicles coming, from personal vehicles loaded to the top with stuff to trucks coming in."
Troops of volunteers unload the donations, sort them, and store them in the warehouse until they can be shipped to Haiti.
Antonio helps out full time, using a skid to move pallets full of sorted goods into place.
"Six trucks came in full of water, so that kind of helps out alot," he said.
Outreach and Communications Director Lena Smolinsky said they'll keep it up as long as there's a need.
"We hope that people don't forget about it in a couple of months, because the people are still going to need help."
She told us it can be hard for her to look at the heartbreaking images from Haiti.
"We concentrate on the good we're doing and the people we can help, and the difference we can make."
They accept any donations, but appreciate survival basics: food, water, first aid, hygeine items, and always cash, which covers the transportation costs.
The first shipment, nine truckloads in all, is due to leave for Haiti Wednesday.
