Homeowner kills robber in Ocoee shootout
A man coming home from work early Monday morning killed one would-be robber and sent a second running for his life in Ocoee.

A man who appears to be the homeowner (pictured left) returned home shortly after 8 a.m. and started cleaning his driveway of the blood left behind by the assailants.
Ocoee Police say the victim returned to his house in the Orchard Park neighborhood on Pomegranate Court around 12:30 a.m. and noticed a suspicious car near his driveway. After pulling into the home, two men, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, allegedly attacked the homeowner.
But the victim, who authorities say has a concealed weapons permit, did not go down easily: Ocoee Police say he pulled his gun and opened fire on the robbers, who fired back. The homeowner was wounded, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
One of the robbers was killed. The second ran away and is still on the loose. Investigators say he has "distinctive tattoos" that should help them find him.

Police have now identified the suspect killed as David Lee Butler (pictured left). Butler has an extensive violent criminal history including an active warrant for a previous home invasion robbery out of Lake County.
Anyone with information is asked to call Ocooe Police at (407)905-3160 or Crimeline at (407)923-TIPS.
What others are saying
- perhaps if dave is faced with 2 men attacking him at his own home he can yell"i'll call 9-1-1 on my cell phone" and wait to see what happens---at my own house I'll shoot to kill if attacked especially if they're armed
- DaveDave sounds fishy to me. He must be a lawyer ot a prosecuter. Dude had a lenthy criminal past! Your speculation smells fishy. Dave Morris. Have you ever been in that situation I have. It's either you or them!
- Something Wrong HereWait a minute. The "homeowner" pulled his gun first. It was the dead guy who pulled his in self-defense. And we have only the "homeowner's" account of this event (no witnesses). How do we know these two guys were "robbers" if they didn't use force? Whole thing is fishy.
- open carry?I commend the man for defending himself! Thank God he had the forethought and time to get his conceal license. I wonder however if he would have been targeted if he was open carrying like gun owners can do in 43 states to deter crime?
- Doug, it was there, WDBO removed it after my comment.
I commend them for setting it straight. - With a cpl or an openly carried firearm u have the right to protect yourself and your property and can use deadly force if the robber is trying to cause u harm or death. Furthermore a cpl is an infringement of ur rights, if your a felon u can't purchase a firearm in the first place so why should u have to pay for a licence to bear arms?
- Victim Not MisusedYou are all reading the article wrong. The only person identified as a victim was the home owner. Not the dead perp.
- Congrats to WDBOI see you removed the "victim" when referring to Butler, and you no longer call him "Mister".
Good job!! - W.T.F.!Get it right, the dead dirt-bag ISN'T the "victim"!!!
- Lock And LoadAttention ALL THUGS:
We are armed and dangerous ,Warning do not Rob our pockets, rape our women, enter our homes you will DIE quickly - no victimButler was not a victim except of his own greed and stupidity. Butler is a dead violent criminal. The homeowner is the victim twice over - once by these criminals and once by the system that allowed Butler to be on the streets with a warrant when he had "an extensive violent criminal history".
- irresponsible reportinggood to see he defended himself BUT it is negligent of you to publish the photo and address of a crime victim in this fashion.
- Poor BabyMr. Butler, with "an extensive violent criminal history including an active warrant for a previous Home Invasion Robbery" was a victim?
Why was this poor baby out on the street where he could get hurt? Why wasn't he tucked away in his nice, safe cage?
WDBO, this thug wasn't a victim. He was a violent criminal, and the world is a cleaner, better place without him.
Shame on you for calling him a victim.
Shame on the courts for turning him loose on the rest of us.
Homeowner, thank you for protecting yourself and your neighborhood. Thank you for being prepared.
I wish you well, sir. - shootoutgreat job
- everyones a victimthey refer to the homeowner as well as the robber who was killed both as "victims" everyone is a victim in america..
so who's the bad guys if all parties involved are victims? must be those evil guns perpetrating it all. - homeowner comes out aheadI find it increasingly difficult to understand why the robbers, rapists, and thieves don't listen to the current events or read the newspapers. Concealed carry is on the rise exponentially around the country and I believe our great state of Florida leads the way in processing concealed carry permit applications. My question is, when will they learn? My answer is, look at the jail population...I think never.
- Gun ViolenceClearly this is indication that we need more gun control laws here in florida. This poor trouble youth was really a good kid and probably fell in with the wrong crowd. I bet dollars to doughnuts he was just about to turn his life around. Nah,I'm just kidding.
- Good ThinkingYes, we will arm ourselves and protest what we have worked for. We need to go back to the chain gang days and make is so bad that the criminals will not want to come back to jail. The goodie two shoes who are liberal and against the jail birds working for society will think twice if one of the birds did harm to their family or did property damage. What ever happened to the law that convenioence workers working at night must be protected behind bad guy proof glass?
- "GUN" violenceI'm sure this is simply a case of misunderstanding. CLEARLY the dead suspect "fell in with the wrong crowd" and was "just about to turn his life around". Clearly we need to tighten our gun laws more so things like this never happen again.
- MikeWhat??????????
Ha???????????
What???????????
Are you smoking crack? - UnknownCould this be some kind of setting to steal the money from the insurance company by the home owner and other party?
- Ocoee Home InvasionToo bad he only got one. We need more dead bad guys. Kudos to the homeowner. Glad he's going to be OK.
- Another one bites the dust!I love to see these. I love it when another POS is taken off the streets.
One down, one to be caught.....and alot more to go!
great work......homeowner. - DRTAs Neal says "I love a good DRT story, Dead Right There!"
- Homeowner kills robberYet again the second amendment is upheld. We have a law abidiing homeowner confronted by two robbers with guns. The intentions of the robbers are clear when a gun is present. The result is one dead bad guy and one scared bad guy facing felony murder charges when he is caught. The second amendment is for all of us. We have a God given right to protect ourselves and the lives of our families. I for one am glad that I live in a state that beleives in the Bill of Rights.
- ThugsGood going homeowner, I wish I could say that I feel bad for this thug, but he chose his own destiny. I carry a concealed weapon and will not hesitate to defend myself, period! Thugs lookout there are a lot more of people carrying concealed weapons than you might think. The only people I feel for are the thugs family. Homeowner did what he had to do.
- shootoutHope the home owner is going to be okay and thank him for taking another thug off the streets.Wonder how long this guys rap sheet is.Proably shoud of been residing in jail yet
