Tax watchdog group recommends four-day work week
As state lawmakers look for ways to trim the budget, a tax watchdog group is suggesting a four-day work week.

The senior vice president of Florida TaxWatch says lawmakers can't raise taxes and fees or cut core services, so it's time to do something radical. Harvey Bennett says going to a four-day, 10-hour work week would save a lot of money.
"We think that very, very conservatively there's about $5 million a year in savings just by doing that here in Florida," said Bennett.
He points to Utah as a model. Last year that state adopted a four-day work week, and Bennett says it increased worker productivity.
"Lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Utah actually got shorter with offices open earlier and staying open later," said Bennett. "There was a significant reduction in sick days."
In 2007, Seminole County Schools went to a four-day work week in the summer.
"We ended up reaping $20,000 a day in savings, so for those nine Fridays that reaped an additional $180,000 (savings) for the district," said Regina Klaers, the school district spokeswoman. "The biggest bang for our buck comes through the electrical savings with all the lights and the air conditioning and the computer use that's going on."
Bennett says Utah saw cuts in energy costs as well, but the biggest savings came in another area.
"If they're working a four-day, 10-hour work week, it's kind of hard to work more than 10 hours in a day, so it greatly reduced the employee overtime there in Utah," said Bennett.
The suggestion to go to a Monday through Thursday work week was one of several recommendations on ways to save money that came from a Florida TaxWatch task force. The group met for nine months, and they say their ideas would save the state more than $3 billion in the coming fiscal year.
