The mission of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles is get more Hispanics involved in the political process.

"This is an effort to educate Latinos about the conservative agenda," said Alfonso Aguilar, the group's executive director.

He says by and large Latinos lean to the right on issues such as abortion and stem-cell research.

"All of these things go against the family values of Latinos and their belief in the dignity of the human person," said Aguilar. "Hispanic values are conservative values," said Aguilar.

But he argues that the GOP sometimes drives Latinos away with harsh rhetoric on immigration. He says Arizona's new immigration law is misguided.

"Frankly, we think that can lead to discrimination," said Aguilar. "I think it criminalizes people that the economy of the state needs. If we want to stop crime, we should focus intensely [on] the criminals and the drug traffickers and not on good hardworking people."

However, Aguilar doesn't blame Republicans for the tough new law. He says it's the fault of the Obama administration for not strictly enforcing federal immigration law and for refusing to take on immigration reform. He wants conservative Latinos to speak up about the issue.

"Our message is that Latinos cannot be passive observers of what's going on," said Aguilar.

Tonight's Latino Partnership townhall is free and open to the public. It takes place from 7:00 to 9:00 at Peniel Christian Church on 5301 Goddard Avenue in Orlando.
