John McCain knew the crowd at the Urban League convention would be pro-Barack Obama, but that didn't stop him from attacking the presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee."If there's something he always delivers it's a great speech, but I hope you'll listen carefully because his ideas are not always as impressive as his rhetoric," McCain said to the mostly black gathering at the Marriot World Center in Orlando.
McCain called for school vouchers and said Obama's ideas on education are old and outdated.
McCain was on stage for more than an hour. Half of the time was spent taking questions from the audience.
One questioner criticized McCains proposals to increase offshore drilling, saying it would have little effect on gas prices.
McCain responded:
"I don't agree," he said. "I met with oil executives just a few days ago in California. The fact is that we can, using existing facilities, expand our oil production within months."
McCain was also asked how he would work to reduce crime in American cities.
He responded by saying he would use some of the same tactics that have been used to secure the streets in Iraq.
"Some of those tactics... are somewhat like what we use in the military," he said. "You go into neighborhoods, you clamp down, you provide a secure environment for the people who live there."
After the speech, McCain met with Spanish voters at Poncho's Bakery on the east side. He was joined there by Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Mel Martinez.
