Even though Toy Story 4 has not yet hit the theaters, director Josh Cooley wants to make sure that it was done right for the fans and the family of the Late Don Rickles.
As many of you may remember, the actor who played Mr. Potato Head passed away from kidney failure back in April 2017. Although Don Rickles had originally signed on to appear in the new movie before his passing, he unfortunately did not record any dialogue for it.
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cooley said that the request to use Rickles voice in the new movie was from his family. However, without Rickles himself to voice his iconic character, how can this problem be solved?
The remedy was far from easy. Cooley says that they had to go through 25 years worth of audio that was never used that had Mr. Potato Head in it. That includes the movies, the theme parks, the ice capades, and of course, the video games. Thankfully, Cooley confirms that they were able to come up with enough material that they could use for the film.

All of his pieces may be replaceable, but his voice is not. Honored he signed on for TS4, honored he’s in TS4. pic.twitter.com/Q7cTRSQNwh
The only thing left to do is mark your calendars for Toy Story 4, which comes out on June 21st.
