AccuWeather released its official forecast for the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season on Wednesday and meteorologists are calling for near to above normal tropical activity.
Meteorologists are predicting a total of 12-14 named storms. Among those, 5-7 are expected to reach hurricane strength.
AccuWeather is also calling for 2-4 major hurricanes this season. Tropical cyclones are classified as major hurricanes after they reach Category 3 strength.
As for this year’s El Niño, AccuWeather predicts the current phase and intensity should continue through the summer months into the heart of hurricane season. If it does, you can expect wind shear will limit tropical cyclone development in the Atlantic basin.
The 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30.
