ORLANDO, FLORIDA — Opponents of bear hunting in Florida staged a protest Monday morning by hanging a banner over the I-4 overpass at Conroy Road to send a message to drivers during their morning commute.

The banner read 'TELL FWC NO BEAR HUNT.' The protest comes just days before activists with the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida head to Tallahassee for a meeting where Florida Fish and Wildlife will discuss "bear management," according to the groups press release.

ARFF coordinator Bryan Wilson says "We will be at this meeting to remind the FWC why they should keep the bear hunt option off the table. Putting effort into teaching neighbors how to live safely with bears makes sense and no one loses their life. Education is the answer, not senseless killing for a trophy."

In 2016, an approved bear hunt in the state of Florida killed more than 300 bears. Before that, bear hunting was not allowed in the state for 20 years.
