Melbourne, Fla — Viera High School will have extra counselors in place for a second day after a student collapsed during class Monday.
Sophomore Colin Seely fell while doing laps during his J.R.O.T.C. class in 7th period.
The instructor and another teacher immediately began administering CPR and an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED) was also used.
Seeley was transported to Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando, where he was last listed in critical condition.
Viera High School Principal Sarah Robinson sent the following message to parents Tuesday.
Dear Parents,
On Monday afternoon, a 10th grade Viera High School student collapsed while running laps during his 7th period JROTC class. Immediately, the JROTC instructor and another teacher who was in the vicinity performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) on him. The student was transported to the hospital and is receiving care. Counselors were on campus at Viera High today to provide support to students and staff. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not sharing the student’s name. Counselors will continue to be on campus tomorrow in the event that any student needs someone to speak with. We remain hopeful for a swift and full recovery.
Sincerely,
Sarah Robinson, Acting Principal
