New trash pick-up rules that went into effect June 1 have caused a stir in Deltona, with some residents complaining that it has resulted in more trash on the street and less in the truck.
The Deltona City Council will meet Tuesday to discuss the ordinance, and residents will have an opportunity to voice their concerns.
The new rules require residents to put their trash in a container compatible with the city’s trucks.
If residents put excess garbage next to the bin, though, it generally isn’t picked up, which is a sticking point for some in the city.
“I mean, that kind of stinks,” Deltona resident Diana Ferro said. “It is not very convenient.”
The mess left behind on trash days has become a bit overwhelming, resident Pete Hill said.
“I think it is unsightly,” he said. “I don’t think it’s necessary.”
Deltona residents can purchase an additional trash bin from the city.
They can also call to have extra trash picked up, but Hill didn’t understand why trash outside the bin couldn’t be collected the same time the bins are emptied.
“It doesn’t make sense to me to send another truck out,” the 30-year Deltona resident said.
Ferro was looking forward to having the opportunity to voice her concerns during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
“That will be good for those who have an issue with the trash rules,” she said.
The Deltona City Council meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
