Fort Leavenworth escapee found in Florida 37 years later

James Robert Jones was one of the Army's 15 most wanted fugitives

A Fort Leavenworth escapee on the run for nearly 40 years has been caught living in Florida.

The U.S. Marshals Service found 69-year-old James Robert Jones living under an assumed name in Deerfield Beach where he was arrested Thursday.

He was serving a 23-year sentence for premeditated murder and aggravated assault when he escaped from the maximum-security military prison 37 years ago, in 1977, becoming one of the Army's 15 most wanted fugitives.

A Kansas television reports Jones was found after U.S. Marshals ran his photo through a database and found a match to a 1981 Florida driver's license issued under a different name.

According to the Associated Press, Barry Golden of the U.S. Marshals Service says Jones told officers, quote, ``I knew this would catch up with me someday.''

We've learned Jones will be extradited back to Kansas to finish his sentence.
