A stadium originally built to hold 10,000 people is being gutted and rebuilt from the inside out as the Florida Citrus Bowl undergoes it most extensive renovation since it was opened in 1936.
"When renovations to the Citrus Bowl are completed, we will be home to some of the most outstanding sports venues in the country," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
Here are some milestones since the stadium opened in 1936:
- 1947- The first Tangerine Bowl was played in the Greater Orlando Stadium and tickets sold for $1.20 to $3.00
- 1952- The stadium added seats to accomodate 12,000 fans
- 1967- A second deck is built on the west side of the Tangerine Bowl, increasing capacity to 17,000
- 1976- A major reconstruction, the stadium reopens with over 50,000 seats
- 1983- It is renamed the Florida Citrus Bowl
- 1989- Another expansion, raising capacity to 65,438
- 1990- $30 million is spent to add upper decks along each sideline with 9,000 additional seats
- 2010- New Astroturf is installed as part a $10 million upgrade
- 2014- Reconstruction starts with final completion date of March 2015, but ready for play by Nov. 2014
