Named the 38th Chief for OPD Wednesday, John Mina says he's already prepared to hit the ground running.
Introduced after Mayor Buddy Dyer announced the retirement of OPD Police Chief Paul Rooney, the 45 year old Mina (pronounced MEENA), has been with the OPD for 23 years, and worked in several divisions in the department including patrol, criminal investigations, drug enforcement, and as a former SWAT commander.
To many, he is a natural choice. “Chief Mina has grown through the ranks of OPD over the last 23 years and remains committed to ensuring safety is a top priority for the City of Orlando,” said Dyer.
City Commissioner Tony Ortiz told NEWS 96.5 he rode wih John Mina in the drug unit many years ago. "We think alike and the guy is awesome." Ortiz also calls Mina "proactive" and says he'll tackle problems before they get too big."
Mina says he wants to focus on your home security, endorses neighborhood watch programs, and issues a stern warning to criminals. “We will hunt you down and bring you to justice."
Mina also says he wants to reach out to returning veterans to consider pursuing jobs in law enforcement.
The Orlando City Council will vote on Mina's confirmation at their Feb. 24 meeting.
