Congressman John Mica revealed today that he received a letter from Veterans Affairs Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson confirming that the outpatient clinic in Baldwin Park will remain open after the new VA Medical Center in Lake Nona is fully up and running.
Mica has been championing the Baldwin Park facility as a domiciliary for homeless and recovering vets. It also has outpatient facilities that would be more convenient for some veterans who would otherwise have to travel additional miles to south Orange County.
Mica shared the news with local reporters on a conference call this afternoon.
In a prepared statement, Mica said "This is a victory for Veterans and keeping the clinic and medical facility open. The VA estimates supported our concerns that keeping this facility open is vital to meeting local veterans’ needs. Veterans and community leaders joined in making this possible. When Central Florida comes together in one voice, anything and everything is possible."
The letter from Gibson confirmed that the new VA facility will not be able to handle the growing health care needs of veterans in Central Florida.
