Monster energy drink under fire again

Monster energy drink and similar products continue to come under increasing scrutiny.

The food and Drug Administration has been investigating reports of deaths linked to energy drinks, but noted the reports have not proved the high caffeine drinks caused any deaths.

Now, Prosecutors in New York and San Francisco are teaming up in an investigation as to how the Monster beverage company markets it's product to children.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has issued subpoenas to Monster and other energy drink companies as part of an on going investigation.

In San Francisco, City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a lawsuit claiming the energy drinks pose great health risks and is accusing the makers of Monster of violating state laws by misbranding its drink and marketing  it to minors.

Monster spokeswoman Tammy Taylor said the drinks are not marketed to kids and are not highly caffeinated.  Taylor says a 16 ounce of Monster conatins less than half the caffeine of a similar sized cup of coffee.

According to Taylor, Monster has sold more than 10 billion cans of the drink worldwide.  The beverage does have a disclaimer on the can:  not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant women or women who may be nursing
