Police at the Tampa International Airport are investigating after maintenance workers discovered a passenger dead in an elevator shaft.
Airport officials say the body 31-year-old Chad Wolfe, of West Newton, Pa., was found Friday morning.
Records show Wolfe arrived in Tampa from Atlanta shortly after midnight Friday.
Tampa Bay Online reports what airport officials told Wolfe's father:
Wolfe's father said airport police told him that his son tried to open the elevator doors by force.
"It looks like he had pried open an elevator and fell to his death," Garland Wolfe said. "He's only 150 pounds roughly and to pry an elevator door open — I don't see how that happened."
Maintenance first noticed problems with the elevator at the short term parking garage several hours later.
There was no immediate evidence of foul play, but investigators were still trying to determine how Wolfe got into the shaft.
The medical examiner will determine Wolfe's cause of death.
