Navy releases video of Laser Weapon System testing

LaWS It looks like something out of a SciFi movie, but  the Laser Weapon System could be the future of military weaponry.

The U.S. Navy has released footage from successful testing of its new Laser Weapon System.

The LaWS was installed aboard the U.S.S. Ponce which is currently stationed in the Persian Gulf.

Military developers have been working on the LaWS for several years and while the laser is not as powerful as some conventional weapons, testing has proven the technology can be applied to the modern day battle field.

The LaWS can also be operated at a fraction of the cost of convetional weapons.  The Wall Street Journal reports the LaWS costs roughly 59 cents per shot and can be used to fire on multiple targets within seconds.

Last month's successful testing of the LaWS could usher in a new type of weaponry which can be used by all branches of the U.S. military.
