A former member of the U.S. Navy SEALs who spent 20 years in the elite military group, including in dangerous war zones, has come out as transgender in a new biography, called Warrior Princess.
Kristin Beck, who was formerly Chris Beck, knew from early in childhood that he felt like he was a girl, but suppressed that for decades, Beck's co-author, Anne Speckhard, told ABC News.
After Beck's retirement in 2011, he decided to start living as a woman, and made the announcement to friends online.
Beck is currently on hormone therapy in preparation for sexual reassignment surgery and lives and dresses as a woman.
In the preface to Warrior Princess, Beck said she wrote the book, quote, "to reach out to all of the younger generation and encourage you to live your life fully and to treat each other with compassion, be good to each other . . . "
