Kentucky-based pizza maker Papa John's is apologizing for using the name of a Russian Communist dictator for a promo code to order discounted pizza.
Russian users who wrote "Josef Stalin" in the Papa John's app were to get cheaper pizza with that code. The morbid irony is that under Stalin's rule, millions of Russians died from starvation.
Under Stalin's rule, 6-8 million Russians are said to have died of famine. Millions of others died in the gulag and from executions.

In a Facebook posting in Russian (translated to English), Papa John's took ownership of the blunder and apologized:
<i>Pizza chain "Papa John" sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings insulted promo code "iosifstalin" that we used in one of our stock for lovers online game World of Tanks. "Papa John" in any case did not pursue the goal to rethink or give their assessment of Stalin - we always try to be apolitical. This time, unfortunately, we did not succeed, and the offer to decipher the abbreviation of one of the models of tanks caused an unexpected reaction for us. The action was to give free pizza to a lot of people are social. networks, but does not ignite controversy and scandals. I would like to emphasize that the action was organized exclusively by us without any support from the developers of the popular free online game World of Tanks. Once again I apologize to everyone whom we - albeit unconsciously - offended.</i>
