Traffic is slowly getting back to normal for southbound travelers on Interstate 95, after a deadly multiple-vehicle crash this morning in Brevard County.

Northbound travelers through West Melbourne will still have to detour up to U-S HWY 192 for some time.

One person was killed after a truck driver lost control of a semi-trailer after a blown tire.

The semi then traveled through the median guardrail.

A construction excavator was being hauled by the semi, and it flew off it's trailer into oncoming northbound traffic.

The excavator struck another semi, Florida State Patrol troopers said.

The accident happened around 9:30am Thursday, near mile marker 177 in Palm Bay.

News 96.5 WDBO's Traffic Reporter Jackie O'Brien says officials need to make repairs on the damaged roadway.

Two other vehicles that were traveling northbound were struck with debris, said Kim Montes of FHP, but people in those vehicles were not injured.

The driver of the first tractor-trailer was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the northbound truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
