'Pink Tax' makes female items more expensive

Male and female products

Why do female razors cost more than men's?

Whether or not companies want to admit it, a 'pink tax' if often added to products, generally decided by the gender of whom the product is intended for.

In fact, a recent study by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs found that haircare products for women cost on average 48% more than the same items meant for men.

The agency compared nearly 800 products with clear male and female versions from more than 90 brands sold at two dozen New York City retailers, both online and in stores.

Overall, the DCA found that women’s products cost 7 percent more than similar products for men.

This included jeans, shampoos, and toys.

In all but five of the 35 product categories analyzed, products for female consumers were priced higher than those for male consumers.

Women around the world are taking a stand in the fight against the 'pink tax'.

Gender-based pricing was debated in the British parliament on Tuesday, with one MP calling the practice "exploitation."
