A security guard at a strip mall casino shot a would-be armed robber early Tuesday morning, Melbourne police said.

According to police, three men tried to rob Allied Veterans of the World Arcade at 3299 Babcock Street. The security guard confronted them and shot one of the men.

Two of the would-be robbers fled the scene, police said.

"We were just all playing , it was very quiet and then I heard four gun shots go off and then the smoke, you could smell from the gun," said witness Ann Summers.

Investigators said the suspects did not get away with any money.

Police said the man who was shot was caught and taken into custody near the Allied Veterans building.  He is in stable condition, police said.

The name of the man in custody was not released.
