Raised in Parramore, Regina Hill will now serve her neighbors and the rest of the communities that make up District 5 on Orlando City Council after taking the oath of office as a city commissioner.
Also sworn into were Commissioners Jim Gray and Robert Stuart.
"I ask God to give me an understanding heart so that I may serve you with understanding and wisdom," Hill said in a speech sprinkled with religious references.
Hill touched on chronic unemployment in her district. "For I long believe that the best social program is a job .Employment provides income and, most importantly, it provides dignity," she said.
Hill is the successor to Commissioner Daisy Lynum who served the city for 16 years.
Commissioner Gray welcomed Hill to city council. "This council, as well as the entire city staff, has been here to help me, listen to me and at the end of the day respect my decision. I have no reason to think they won't do the same for you," he said.
