The medical staff who removed a “bluish mass” from a woman’s eye in the United Kingdom never expected it to be a glob of 27 contact lenses.
According to Optometry Today, Doctor Rupal Morjaria was preparing the 65-year-old patient for routine cataract surgery when she discovered 17 contact lenses clumped together.
“We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there,” Morjaria told the website.
After further examination, the doctor found an additional 10 lenses throughout the woman’s eye.
The incident occurred last November, but was reported this month.
The planned cataract surgery had to be rescheduled because of the bacteria that grew under the contacts.
