Three dead in Tavares murder-suicide identified

Police have identified the victims of Monday evening's deadly baseball bat-beating as Shannon Marie Ratliff, Mavis Ratliff and Eddie Dean Ratliff.

Their attacker was James Earl Jones, 32, police said.

All four lived together in a home on Hibiscus Court, near Lake Dora where Jones was found later dead of an apparent drowning.

The women did not survive the beating. Eddie Ratliff is hospitalized.

Police are still trying to learn what sparked the violence.

Virginia Hall identified herself as one of the victim's cousins and said "everyone is torn up about it."

A police incident report revealed that Shannon Marie Ratlife, 42, was found dead in the living room, with severe injuries to her head. Her mother Mavis, 66, was outside the home, also suffering from a head wound and her brother Eddie, 51, was also outside on the ground with a head wound.

They were both flown to Ocala Regional, where Eddie underwent surgery.

During the police response, an officer ordered Jones to drop the bat, which he did. He then challenged the officer to shoot him with a Taser, but ran off.

Later, his body was fished out of the lake.

Police contacted Jones' father who told them his son was schizophrenic and off his medication.
