A group of foreign exchange students probably did not expect to find a 10-12 foot great white shark during their snorkeling trip near Islamorada.
The large fish was spotted on Alligator Reef on Saturday; it is a rare encounter in the Keys, according to the Miami Herald.
The charter of 13 people, mostly exchange students, was accompanied by Captain Chris Muller who said he had never seen a great white in person.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” Muller told the newspaper, “especially not in the Keys, and I’ve swam with a lot of sharks.”
According to the Miami Herald, the group had just gotten into the water when they found the massive creature. Captain Muller quickly got everyone back on the boat once he realized what was happening.
