Last summer, 134 children got lost on Volusia County beaches.

Now, we've learned its Beach Patrol is using a new program to find kids who get separated or wander away from their families on the beach.

Beach Safety Ocean Rescue has ordered 20,000 water-proof wrist bands that a life guard or officer will use to write the child's name and parent's cell phone number on.

When a family arrives at the beach, they’ll first be directed to a life guard or officer to write on the bands.

With a cost of $600, the county hopes the program will be a quick way to reunite lost children with their families.

“Obviously we want the parents to watch the children, but we all know how children can get away when it’s busy on the beach," said Mark Swanson, Volusia County’s Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Director.

Parents said the program will also help make them feel more at ease during beach trips.
