VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A man accused of shooting a Daytona Beach police officer faced a Volusia County judge Friday afternoon.
Surrounded by several corrections officers Othal Wallace as a judge formally read the charges against him.
When asked if he had anything to say, Wallace only said that he wanted a public defender until he could hire a private attorney.
Daytona Beach police said Othal Wallace shot Officer Jason Raynor in the head during an altercation near an apartment complex last week.
The shooting sparked a nationwide search for Wallace, who was eventually caught in Georgia over the weekend.
Raynor is still recovering in the hospital.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office released a video showing Wallace’s return to Central Florida.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood thanked the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister (who provided an HCSO plane for transport) and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey for his coordination and support.
On June 23, the Daytona Beach Police Department responded to Kingston Avenue in reference to an officer down, according to an affidavit.
Police said Raynor was shot in the face at least one time.
According to an arrest affidavit, Raynor’s body camera showed him walk up to a car parked on Kingston Avenue.
The video shows Wallace exit the car and refuse to follow commands from Raynor.
The affidavit then says Wallace began to struggle with Raynor and a gunshot was heard.

Detectives then spoke with Tyesha Lewis, Wallace’s girlfriend. Lewis said when she returned from work she heard a commotion coming from outside. She went outside and saw that the officer had been shot, the report said.
A judge ordered that Wallace be held without bond until his next court date.
