Zoology students taking a class with Rollins College Associate Professor of Biology Bobby Fokidis, have discovered a rare black coyote in Winter Park.

The animal is making it’s home in the Genius Preserve Park.

Professor Fokidis is researching animals that live in urban area to see how they interact with their environment, he released a video of the rare animal on YouTube.com. App users click here to see it.

While rare, this is not the only black coyote spotted in Florida in the past month.

Fox 13 in Tampa reported that on November 18 a black coyote was spotted in the West Chase neighborhood in Hillsborough County.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says they are found throughout the state but are rare.

Black coyotes are the same species as other coyotes but have more melanin in their fur, making them considerably darker.

Experts say only six percent of coyotes have black fur, a theory is this is likely a result of breeding with dogs

Professor Fokidis and his students are now observing the habits of the creatures using a camera.

You can follow Fokidis’ YouTube channel HERE to stay updated on what the class encounters.
