The city of Palm Springs, CA is launching a new universal basic income (UBI) program - one that benefits transgender and nonbinary residents.
The pilot program will pay $900 a month for 18 months to 20 residents who identify as trans or nonbinary - with no strings attached and no income requirements.
The program has generated a lot of controversy. One city councilman called it “outrageous and discriminatory”. Palm Springs Mayor Lisa Middleton, who is trans, said transgender Americans face “enormous challenges” and high rates of unemployment.
