Florida’s U.S. Representatives and Senators issue statements on chaos at the Capital

We’re hearing strong statements from Florida’s Congressmen about the chaos that took place Wednesday in Washington D.C.

Florida’s tenth district Congresswoman, Val Demmings sent a message via Twitter just hours after a group of angry protestors stormed the Capitol in Washington D.C.

Rep. Demmings called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump stating “Everybody counts, but everybody is accountable.”

Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, D-FL 7th district, also shared her thoughts on Twitter, stating “Congress will not be intimidated.”

She said they would finish their work and certify the results, which were official at about 4 a.m. Thursday.

Florida’s 8th district congressman Bill Posey issued a statement on his website.

“America has always been first, and foremost, about the rule of law, and that must be respected. I’m disappointed that today’s Congressional proceedings over counting and challenging electoral votes were disrupted by a small number of individuals who breached Capitol security. I’m grateful to our law enforcement for their courage in protecting the Capitol Building, and the public, and urge everyone to respect their authority. I share the frustration of many Americans who do not feel they are being treated fairly, but we can and should do better.”

We checked for a statement from ninth district Congressman Darren Soto and did not find one on early Thursday morning.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio took the floor of the chamber late Wednesday with a strong statement saying he understands that people are upset, but that democracy is held together by the confidence in elections and the process.

Rubio emphasized that “just a few hours ago someone died” and said that “China is laughing, they are loving this tonight.”

He went on to say that “there’s nothing that Vladamir Putin could have come up with better than what happened right here.”

The senator wrapped up by saying, " America is not a government, America is not a President, America is not a Congress. Let me tell you what America is - America is your family! America is your faith! America is your community! That’s America!”

Florida Senator Rick Scott took time to thank the Capitol Police while condemning the “thugs” that stormed the building.

He also sent a tweet stating, “What happened today at the Capitol is disgraceful and un-American. It is not what our country stands for.”
