More than a year after Justify pulled off an amazing Triple Crown victory, a report has surfaced that claims the horse should never have been allowed to participate in any of the event's races.
Quoting various sources, the New York Times claims the colt tested positive for scopolamine on April 7th, 2018 -- less than a month before the Kentucky Derby.
Scopolamine is a banned performance-enhancing drug that should have led to Justify's disqualification.
The issue came to the attention of the California Horse Racing Board four months after Justify became the 13th Triple Crown victor, but the board's members reportedly wrote it off as a result of the horse eating jimson weed, which is known to give false positives for scopolamine, the Times reports.
They've since reduced the penalty for giving performance-enhancing drugs to horses. Justify is now retired.
